About Me

Lisa Wilson (She/Her)

Registered Psychotherapist

My passion for mental health began in my early teens. While I haven't always been a therapist, supporting others to thrive has forever shown up in my education, careers, and interests. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Guelph in 2011, and completed my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University in 2023. In the intervening years, I worked in the field of early child development, where I was especially enthusiastic about supporting emotion regulation and socialization skills in young children. I found fulfillment in the challenge of supporting families struggling with parenting, divorce, addiction, and other issues. I decided to grow my skills by volunteering as a crisis line worker and Victim Services volunteer. This gave me extensive training and exposure to the idea that most people don't need advice. They need someone who can hold space for them, make them feel safe and understood, and who will never judge. Skill building and resource work have an important place in therapy, but the most essential thing is for a client to feel heard. As Theodore Roosevelt said, "People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care".

While I work from a cognitive behavioural orientation and use specific interventions, the flow of our sessions is always flexible and based on your goals and what works best for you in that moment. Sometimes, you may just need to talk things out with someone who can listen and validate your feelings. Other times, you may benefit from gentle challenging or specific exercises designed to identify and change your unhelpful thinking patterns. I encourage open and honest communication so that we can work in the way that best supports you.
